BandEat is a high-performance audio player engineered from the ground up in Rust. A compact, skinnable player interface sits on top of a fully decoupled engine: the user interface, the real-time audio thread, the downloader and the library never block one another.

Tracks are identified by their content, not their file name, so your playlists and history survive renames, moves and re-downloads. Smooth smart crossfading, a built-in equaliser, and multi-room synced speakers come standard.

Stable. Decoupled. Fast. No accounts, no telemetry, no nonsense.

Library & Playback
  • MD5 track identity — songs are keyed by a hash of their audio, never their path. Rename or move files freely.
  • Watched source folders — point BandEat at your music directories; it scans and re-scans automatically.
  • Playlists as hash lists — playlists store song identities, so they never break.
  • Instant search — fast metadata filtering of the current list.
  • Loudness normalisation — peak / LUFS levelling so tracks play at an even volume.
Smart Crossfading
  • Configurable crossfade — set the blend duration to taste.
  • Everywhere it matters — fades at a track's natural end, on a manual skip, and even on a mid-song segment jump.
  • Spam-proof — hammer Next ten times a second and the crossfade re-targets cleanly. No pops, no panics, no leaks.
  • Per-track trim — set intro / outro trim points to tighten every transition.
Get Music
  • Built-in downloader — search and pull audio straight into your library.
  • Self-managing tools — the required helper binaries are fetched and kept up to date for you.
  • Async with live progress — downloads never freeze the player; finished files are hashed and imported on the spot.
Interface
  • Classic compact layout — modular, skinnable, immediate-mode (egui).
  • Light & dark themes — high-contrast palettes that follow the system.
  • Queue, playlists, trim & EQ — all a click away in the sidebar.
  • Real-time spectrum visualiser — an FFT view of what's playing.
Architecture

Four independent domains — Interface, Audio Engine, Downloader and Library/State — communicate only through asynchronous channels and lock-free, thread-safe data structures. No shared mutable spaghetti.

  • Dedicated real-time thread — playback runs on its own OS thread and is never blocked by the UI or by disk / network work.
  • Atomic state transitions — play, pause, skip and seek are handled without races, deadlocks or audio glitches.
  • Lock-free hand-off — audio frames cross thread boundaries through a wait-free ring buffer.
Signal Path
  • Symphonia decode — broad format support (MP3, FLAC, AAC, OGG, WAV and more).
  • CPAL output — native low-latency audio on each platform.
  • Modular DSP graph — effect nodes slot into the pipeline so new processing can be added without rework.
  • Device-latency aware — output timing is measured so synced clients never drift ahead.
Effects
  • 10-band equaliser — shape the sound, applied in the live graph.
  • Loudness normalisation — consistent levels across a mixed library.
  • Smart crossfade engine — beat-aware blending designed for seamless transitions.
  • FFT visualiser tap — a non-intrusive spectrum read-out.

Built to stay smooth at all times — even under abuse.

Multi-Room Synced Playback

Turn every phone and laptop on your network into an extra speaker. BandEat streams live audio over WebTransport (HTTP/3 over QUIC) and locks each listener to the same wall-clock instant — so the whole room plays as one.

How It Stays In Sync
  • Wall-clock locked — listeners play each frame at the same moment the host does, cancelling out buffering and network delay.
  • Open in a browser — no app to install on the speakers; it's a plain web page.
  • Self-healing connection — automatic reconnect and certificate refresh keep the stream alive.
  • Per-listener volume & trim — each device fine-tunes its own level and timing.
Remote Control
  • Web remote — browse the library and drive playback from any browser on the LAN.
  • MPD server — control BandEat from any standard MPD client.
  • mDNS discovery — the device announces itself on the local network automatically.
